Football Australia is saddened to learn of the passing of Keith Learmonth, Socceroo #136 and one of New South Wales’ most prolific strikers of the 1950s.
Learmonth began his football journey with Gwynneville and North Wollongong before making his mark at Corrimal Rangers and Corrimal United. Renowned for his goal-scoring ability, he claimed the 1954 Golden Boot title and played a key role in Corrimal’s 1954 treble-winning season, securing the State Premiership, State Cup, and Sydney Cup.
Learmonth earned his place in Australian football history in 1955 when he represented the national team against South Africa, with subsequent appearances for Australia. He became the first player to represent Australia at both junior and senior levels - a milestone that remains a proud part of the Socceroos’ legacy.
Learmonth’s was admired for his sharp instincts on the field, his sportsmanship, and his contribution to the growth of football in regional New South Wales.
Football Australia extends its deepest condolences to the Learmonth family, his friends, former teammates and the wider football community. His legacy lives on in the history of the Socceroos and in the hearts of those he inspired.
