20 years on from that legacy-defining penalty shootout at Stadium Australia against Uruguay, some of the key protagonists - and one notable member of the crowd that day - regaled each other with their memories of the historic moment.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns was amongst the 83,000-strong crowd clad in Green and Gold as Mark Schwarzer and Tony Vidmar provided those in attendance and the millions watching at home with a memory they’ll never forget.
In celebration of 20 years since Australia secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup for only the second time - and the first time in 32 years - Minns welcomed Schwarzer, Vidmar and Ante Covic, who was also part of the squad for the two-legged tie, to Parliament House in Sydney.
Each was presented with a commemorative shirt as they reminisced on the day and what are sure to be more memorable days to come ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup next year - just another bit of the lasting legacy of the class of ‘05’s game-changing achievement.
The event was part of a week of celebrations, with a special documentary airing on Friday night on Channel 10 at 8.40pm AEDT and a spectacular event at Ultra Football in Melbourne where Schwarzer will be joined by John Aloisi and Josip Skoko to rewatch the game, answer questions and more.
