The CommBank Junior Matildas have defeated India 2-0 to start their AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup China 2026™ campaign in Suzhou.
A goal from Theo Mouithys Mickalad and a second-half Indian own goal is what split the sides in this first Group B encounter.
Despite the wet and humid conditions, both sides began the match with a high intensity, transitioning quickly between both boxes.
Australia would create the first clear chance in the 14th minute. Willa Pearson would meet a low-crossed corner at the near post, but her swipe on goal fell just inches wide.
The intensity would continue, headlined by the high press of the green and gold's frontline.
In the 25th minute, Theo Mouithys Mickalad would force the goalkeeper into a wayward clearance, which was pounced on by Claire Corbett.
The forward then played the ball back to Mouithys Mickalad at the edge of the penalty box, who fired her shot into the far corner, opening the scoring.
Five minutes before the break, the ball was crossed into the box toward an unmarked Theo Mouithys Mickalad. The striker did well to meet it at speed and hit the target but the goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to deflect the shot away from goal.
Michael Cooper's side finished the half with the vast majority of possession and chances, but knew that they required a larger gap in the scoreline in order to hold on for the three points.

That perseverance would pay off on the hour mark as Kaya Jugovic's cross from the left flank was swiped at by the Indian centre-back. Her deflection looped over her own goalkeeper and into the back of the net to double Australia's lead.
The attacks began to flow following the second goal, with Claire Corbett on the end of a silky buildup just a few minutes later. The midfielder struck the ball on the run but her shot skimmed the top of the crossbar.
Following this shift in momentum, Michael Cooper elected to make a double substitution, bringing on Hayley Muir and Maeve Nicholas.
The crossing of the CommBank Junior Matildas continued to cause havoc for the defence of India. In the 67th minute, Kaya Jugovic found herself on the end of a floating cross from Sakura Leong, with the forward heading the ball past the goalkeeper.
The celebrations from her and her teammates were cut short however, as Jugovic was judged to be offside.
Abbie Puckett was unlucky not to give Australia their third in the 72nd minute, as she ran through on goal, rounding the goalkeeper.
A combination of the surface and contact from a defender led to Puckett falling to the ground, sustaining a leg injury, which sadly cut her night short. She was replaced in the frontline by Frida Karaberis.
The match was closed out following the final changes of the night, being that of Jada Taylor and then Izabella Rako in the final ten minutes of the match.
The CommBank Junior Matildas must now traverse a short turnaround heading into their second Group B fixture against Lebanon.
Michael Cooper and his side will be hoping to secure a knockout berth during their second game on Tuesday afternoon (3.30pm local/5:30pm AEST).
