Diversity, Equality and Inclusion: Clubs Creating a Place for Everyone in Football
Football is at its best when everyone feels they belong. Across Australia, clubs are finding unique ways to break down barriers, celebrate diversity, and ensure that players, coaches, volunteers and families can participate in an environment where they feel welcomed, valued and respected.
The August Club Changers of the Month showcase how diversity, equality and inclusion can come to life in many different ways, from multicultural programs and all-abilities football to female leadership and community connection.
Roselands FC (Football NSW)
Roselands FC earned recognition for its outstanding multicultural engagement through a successful Multicultural Program delivered at Bennett Park. The initiative brought together participants from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, using football as a vehicle to build friendships, strengthen community connections and create a sense of belonging. Long known for embracing new initiatives, the club has continued to expand its reach by supporting migrant communities and all-abilities participants, reinforcing its reputation as a welcoming and inclusive community club.
Eltham Redbacks FC (Football Victoria)
Eltham Redbacks FC demonstrated that inclusion starts with understanding the needs of participants. In partnership with the Frank Montagnese Foundation, the club launched its first All Abilities football program, providing children and teenagers with disability the opportunity to experience football in a safe and supportive setting. Thoughtful measures including visual schedules, a quiet room, occupational therapy support and volunteer assistance from senior players helped ensure every participant could engage comfortably and confidently.

University of Newcastle FC has embedded inclusion into the fabric of the club through its "United As One" philosophy. Rather than viewing diversity as a standalone initiative, the club has developed a culture where equality, inclusion and welfare are interconnected. By focusing on creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds and ensuring participants feel valued and supported, the club continues to demonstrate how inclusion can shape an entire football environment.
Adelaide University Soccer Club (Football SA)
Adelaide University Soccer Club has focused its efforts on strengthening opportunities for women and girls throughout the club. After reviewing member feedback and club programs, AUSC introduced initiatives that have increased female representation both on and off the field. With female coaches across junior programs, a female Technical Director, and strong female representation on the club's Board, the club is creating visible leadership pathways while ensuring female voices play a central role in shaping its future.
Taroona FC (Football Tasmania)
For Taroona FC, inclusion is woven into everyday club life. The club's commitment extends beyond participation numbers to creating a genuine sense of belonging for players, families, volunteers and supporters. From pioneering Pride Round celebrations to embracing respectful everyday practices that support people from different backgrounds and identities, Taroona has built a culture where individuals feel safe, valued and able to contribute as their authentic selves.
South Toowoomba Hawks (Football Queensland)
South Toowoomba Hawks has created an inclusive culture that extends across participation, leadership and affordability. The club has experienced strong growth in female participation while also engaging families from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, many of whom have become coaches, managers and volunteers. Through affordable registration options, shared equipment programs and an emphasis on equal playing opportunities for junior players, the Hawks have ensured football remains accessible to all members of the community.
Rockingham City FC (Football West)
Rockingham City FC's recognition highlights the club's commitment to creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds to engage with football. Through a strong focus on community connection, welcoming environments and inclusive participation pathways, the club continues to foster a culture where diversity is celebrated and individuals feel supported both on and off the pitch.
Verdi FC (Football NT)
Verdi FC has built its approach around accessibility and community connection. The club works to ensure financial circumstances never become a barrier to participation by leveraging programs such as NT Sports Vouchers and other support mechanisms. Combined with a strong emphasis on positive sideline behaviour, culturally diverse participation and leadership opportunities for volunteers and players, Verdi FC has created an environment where people from all walks of life can play, contribute and thrive.
Lanyon United FC (Capital Football)
Lanyon United FC demonstrates how inclusion can be reflected through a strong sense of community. The club actively welcomes participants regardless of age, gender, ability, background or experience, while creating opportunities for people to connect beyond football through social events, family activities and community initiatives. Its focus on belonging, volunteer engagement and community impact has helped build a culture where members don't just join a football club, they become part of something larger.
These clubs stand out because of the way they each approach diversity, equality and inclusion; each club demonstrating different ways to focus on areas like supporting multicultural communities, disability inclusion, female leadership, affordability, pride initiatives or community engagement.
