Football Australia and CommBank are working together to create more opportunities for our female coaches.
An initiative of the Growing Football Fund is inviting groups of female coaches to CommBank Matildas matches live, at the ground. However, this isn’t just about watching the match.
The coaches are joined by experienced Coach Education Tutors who help create a learning experience where these coaches - who are often early in their coaching journey - engage in a workshop before the match. During the match, they are then challenged to observe the match through a coaching lens.
It is a chance for female coaches to strengthen their knowledge of the game, build community, and improve their confidence in a safe and supportive environment.
The Female Coaches Experience has been run on 8 separate occasions, in the Gold Coast, Newcastle, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Bunbury and most recently Gosford and Adelaide with plans to expand to additional locations as the CommBank Matildas continue to play matches across Australia.
Elisa Brito and the Football Queensland Coach Education team took the group of 12 coaches through a tactical and technical presentation prior to the CommBank Matildas taking on Brazil in December 2024.
“This is only going to grow the female game, and more opportunities like this are just going to get more female coaches in the game,” Brito said.
Jeni Wright, a coach at Robina City FC, said that the initiative supported by the Growing Football Fund benefits both the coaches at the experience, and their players.
“Today is going to help us - when we go back to our own little teams - to look at things differently,” she said.
“A big thank you to CommBank, Football Australia and the Growing Football Fund for bringing us all together and giving us this opportunity.”
At the workshop in Newcastle, when the CommBank Matildas took on Korea Republic in April 2025, Kimberley from Maitland Junior FC explained that these initiatives will grow the CommBank Matildas of the future.
“We need to make sure that we are still supporting female football, because we are coaching the next generation of the next Matildas, so it’s a really exciting experience,” she said.
By observing what the best coaches in the country can do, CommBank and the Growing Football Fund are helping to grow the game at every level, from grassroots to the elite.
